Living for What Really Matters – Chapter 3

Living Like Jesus – Philippians 1:27-2:18

We jump into talking through Philippians as we start at Phil 1:27 and talk through Phil 2:18. There are many well known verses in this section. We talk about the life of Jesus that is humble and how to live a life like Jesus.

Breanne talks about the list in Phil 2:1. This list is outlining what are our motivations. We often think our motivations are doing elements. But Paul flips this and actually shares that our motivations are these experiences we have. He uses a deeply experiential & relational.

Julie shared about the importance of unity. She shared about her look at the list on pages 99-100 and what we should do & not do for pursuing unity. Cultivating unity doesn’t come naturally but it takes intentionality. She shared the lyrics from a song sung at her wedding – May the Mind of Christ My Savior (link below)

Lauren stayed with the same topic of sharing about the call for unity. What is our motivation? God calls us with a big purpose. On pg 102 – “I wrote ARISE Church, Let’s do this together!” Power & clarity come in unity. We as big C church need to be in agreement on the top tier things like Jesus & salvation. We need to get serious about sharing the gospel.
Breanne puts on the “So Whatter” Hat. What does it mean to live like Jesus?

“Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel,” Phil 1:27

Only – worthy of the gospel. All times. All places. All people.

She shared three “so whats?”

  1. Awareness.
Am I aware of what life like Jesus is? Am I aware of life that is not like Jesus? Am I doing this on my own? I have to be doing it in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Who is Jesus? Obedient, humble, love, on minded, suffered well, not with selfish ambition. If I am seeking to live like Christ am I aware of my obedience? In order to do this you can do two things:

    • Build in reflection time
    • Build in rhythms to ask people (friends, family). We have blindspots. We can see some of the spaces but other spaces we need people in our lives.
  2. Emptied.
I am a vessel. The Holy Spirit fills us. What am I full of?
  3.

  4. We are doing this with the Holy Spirit & doing His work.
There is power in the Holy Spirit. Breanne talks about how frustration should signal when we are doing something in our own power. He is with me. He is working in me. I am going to be glad & rejoice.

Lauren talks about how ultimately it isn’t about us. It is about God. We fight for joy. We are unable, but He is able.

We conclude with sharing a resource – With by Skye Jethani. A book that expands on the concept of what it means that “God is with us.”
