Village Kids is committed to creating a classroom environment that is safe, relational, and spiritually encouraging for every child. Our volunteers are trained to build meaningful connections with students while providing clear expectations that help classrooms remain positive and welcoming.

VK values the approach taught by Discipline that Connects  as we create our classroom expectations.

Relational Classroom Environment

Our classrooms are designed to feel small, safe, and personal. Volunteers are encouraged to build genuine relationships with the children in their care by:

  • Learning students’ names and getting to know their interests and stories
  • Welcoming children personally when they arrive
  • Sitting with students during large group time
  • Participating in worship alongside the children
  • Following up on prayer requests or conversations from previous weeks

These relational connections help children feel known, valued, and comfortable in the classroom.

Positive Classroom Management

Village Kids emphasizes connection-based discipline, focusing first on prevention and encouragement.

Volunteers help set classrooms up for success by:

  • Communicating clear and realistic expectations
  • Reinforcing positive behaviors
  • Paying attention to the individual needs of each child

We recognize that behavior often reflects deeper needs, and our volunteers are encouraged to respond with patience, understanding, and care.

If behavioral issues arise, volunteers follow a structured and respectful process:

  1. Address the situation calmly and individually when possible
  2. Remind the child of classroom expectations and give a warning
  3. Explain the appropriate behavior for that situation
  4. Redirect the child toward a positive activity

If the behavior continues, the child may be given a short break in a quiet area away from the group. If needed, a Village Kids Director or another core team member may become involved and parents may be notified.

Addressing Aggressive Behavior

Behaviors such as biting, hitting, pushing, scratching, or pulling are considered aggressive and are addressed immediately.

If this occurs:

  • A Village Kids Director or Core Team member is notified right away
  • The child may be temporarily removed from the classroom
  • Parents are informed of the situation

For younger preschool students (ages 2–3) who are still learning social interactions, additional support—such as closer supervision—may be provided when possible to encourage positive behavior.

Monitoring Classroom Dynamics

Village Kids leadership regularly checks in with volunteers regarding classroom dynamics and student needs. This allows our team to support healthy group relationships and ensure every child has an opportunity to grow and participate.

Appropriate Discipline

Village Kids does not allow physical force as a form of discipline. Physical intervention may only be used in rare situations where it is necessary to prevent a child from harming themselves or others. Even in these cases, protecting all children and maintaining safety is the primary goal.

Modeling Christ-Centered Behavior

Our volunteers understand that children learn not only from lessons but also from the example of the adults around them. Volunteers strive to model Christ-centered attitudes and behaviors in areas such as:

  • Speaking in respectful and encouraging ways
  • Using language that is appropriate and life-giving
  • Demonstrating patience, kindness, and self-control
  • Engaging authentically in prayer and spiritual conversations with students

These examples help create a classroom culture where children see faith lived out in everyday interactions.
